In Memoriam

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq or who died at a military hospital of their injuries:

Durrell L. Bennett, 22, of Spanaway, Wash.; specialist, Army. Bennett was one of two soldiers killed March 29 when a roadside bomb exploded and their unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kan.

Steven I. Candelo, 20, of Houston; corporal, Army. Candelo was killed March 26 when his vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment in Vilseck, Germany.

Dayne D. Dhanoolal, 26, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sergeant, Army. Dhanoolal was killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near his Bradley fighting vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Terrell W. Gilmore, 38, of Baton Rouge, La.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Gilmore was killed March 30 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 769th Engineer Battalion in Baton Rouge, La.

Travis L. Griffin, 28, of Dover, Del.; staff sergeant, Air Force. Griffin was killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 377th Security Forces Squadron at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M.

William G. Hall, 38, of Temecula; major, Marine Corps. Hall died March 30 of injuries suffered a day earlier when his Humvee struck a roadside bomb in Iraq's Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Low-Altitude Air Defense Battalion, Marine Air Control Group 38, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Charles A. Jankowski, 24, of Panama City, Fla.; specialist, Army. Jankowski was killed March 28 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Arab Jabour, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Jevon K. Jordan, 32, of Norfolk, Va.; sergeant, Army. Jordan died March 29 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, where he was being treated for severe head injuries suffered March 23 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Abu Jassim, Iraq. Three other soldiers also were killed in the explosion. Jordan was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Keith M. Maupin, 24, of Batavia, Ohio; staff sergeant, Army Reserve. The armed forces medical examiner confirmed March 29 that human remains recovered March 20 northwest of Baghdad were those of Maupin, who had been captured in an ambush on April 9, 2004. His remains, identified through DNA testing, were found about 12 miles from the site where his fuel convoy had been attacked by insurgents using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. Two other soldiers also were killed in the attack. Maupin was assigned to the 724th Transportation Company in Bartonville, Ill.

Patrick J. Miller, 23, of New Port Richey, Fla.; private first class, Army. Miller was one of two soldiers killed March 29 when a roadside bomb exploded and their unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kan.

Nicholas A. Robertson, 27, of Old Town, Maine; sergeant, Army. Robertson died Thursday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries suffered a day earlier when his unit was attacked while on foot patrol in the Zahn Khan district of Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.
