This is the ad John McCain and the Republican National Committee are desperate you not see.
Why? Because it uses John McCain’s own words. And because they know that what McCain believes is not what the overwhelming majority of Americans believe—it’s miles away, the complete opposite, in fact.
As Hendrik Hertzberg wrote a few months back about the very basic illogic behind McCain’s Iraq policy:
McCain's wants to stay in Iraq until no more Americans are getting killed, no matter how long it takes and how many Americans get killed achieving that goal—that is, the goal of not getting any more Americans killed. And once that goal is achieved, we'll stay.
The American people now say, overwhelmingly, that Iraq was a mistake and that we should set a timetable for the removal of our troops.
But not John McCain.
If John McCain has his way, we’ll stay in Iraq for a hundred years. No matter what the American people want.
So we're not leaving, until they stop killing us or until we're all dead. In which case, we're still staying. Forever, amen.
Or something like that.
-sigh-
