In Memoriam

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Iraq or who died at a military hospital:

Juan M. Alcantara, 22, of New York City; corporal, Army. Alcantara was among four soldiers killed Monday when a bomb exploded inside a house they were searching in Baqubah, Iraq, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Reynold Armand, 21, of Rochester, N.Y.; corporal, Marine Corps. Armand was killed in combat Tuesday in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Travis S. Bachman, 30, of Garden City, Kan.; sergeant first class, Army National Guard. Bachman died Aug. 1 in Mosul, Iraq, of injuries suffered when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Basra, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 714th Security Force in Topeka, Kan.

Justin R. Blackwell, 27, of Paris, Tenn.; specialist, Army. Blackwell was one of two soldiers killed Aug. 5 in a mortar attack on their unit in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 59th Military Police Company, 759th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Jeremy S. Bohannon, 18, of Bon Aqua, Tenn.; private, Army. Bohannon was one of two soldiers killed Aug. 5 in a mortar attack on their unit in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 59th Military Police Company, 759th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Jon E. Bonnell Jr. , 22, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; sergeant, Marine Corps. Bonnell was killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near him in Iraq's Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Nicholas A. Gummersall, 23, of Chubbuck, Idaho; sergeant, Army. Gummersall was among four soldiers killed Monday when a bomb exploded inside a house they were searching in Baqubah, Iraq, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Jaron D. Holliday, 21, of Tulsa, Okla.; private first class, Army. Holliday was among three soldiers killed Aug. 4 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Hawr Rajab, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Julian Ingles Rios, 52, of Anasco, Puerto Rico; master sergeant, Army National Guard. Ingles Rios was killed Aug. 2 when his Humvee was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 130th Engineer Battalion in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Kareem R. Khan, 20, of Manahawkin, N.J.; specialist, Army. Khan was among four soldiers killed Monday when a bomb exploded inside a house they were searching in Baqubah, Iraq, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Jason K. Lafleur, 28, of Ignacio, Colo.; corporal, Army. Lafleur was among three soldiers killed Aug. 4 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Hawr Rajab, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Charles E. Leonard Jr. , 29, of Monroe, La.; specialist, Army. Leonard was killed Aug. 5 when his vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Joey D. Link, 29, of Portland, Tenn.; technical sergeant, Air Force. Link died of natural causes Aug. 5 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. He had been deployed with the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was assigned to the 39th Airlift Squadron at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas.

Braden J. Long, 19, of Sherman, Texas; specialist, Army. Long was killed Aug. 4 in a grenade attack on his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kan.

Bradley W. Marshall, 37, of Little Rock, Ark.; sergeant, Army. Marshall was one of two soldiers killed July 31 when their unit was attacked with indirect fire -- a military term that usually refers to mortar or rocket fire -- in Tunis, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Matthew M. Murchison, 21, of Independence, Mo.; private first class, Army. Murchison was killed Aug. 4 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 127th Military Police Company, 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade in Hanau, Germany.

Christopher T. Neiberger, 22, of Gainesville, Fla.; specialist, Army. Neiberger was killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near him in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Daniel F. Reyes, 24, of San Diego; specialist, Army. Reyes was one of two soldiers killed July 31 when their unit was attacked with indirect fire -- a military term that usually refers to mortar or rocket fire -- in Tunis, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Cristian Rojas-Gallego, 24, of Loganville, Ga.; specialist, Army. Rojas-Gallego was among three soldiers killed Aug. 2 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Eric D. Salinas, 25, of Houston; specialist, Army. Salinas was among three soldiers killed Aug. 2 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Fernando Santos, 29, of San Antonio; staff sergeant, Army. Santos was among three soldiers killed Aug. 2 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Thompson was among four soldiers killed Monday when a bomb exploded inside a house they were searching in Baqubah, Iraq, northeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Christian Vasquez, 20, of Coalinga, Calif.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Vasquez was killed in combat Aug. 2 in Iraq's Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Dustin S. Wakeman, 25, of Fort Worth; sergeant, Army. Wakeman was among three soldiers killed Aug. 4 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Hawr Rajab, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Donald M. Young, 19, of Helena, Mont.; specialist, Army. Young died Wednesday in Baghdad of injuries suffered a day earlier when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in the capital. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.
