I showed your "I don't get Radiohead" post to my husband the other day. He said to me, "That's the same way I feel about Wilco." It was too funny to see you follow it up with your Wilco post.

You know, I woulda thought by now that people had glommed onto the fact that I'm psychic. Sheesh, people, how much more obvious do I need to make it? Dayamn.

Okay, so fair's fair: I'd probably listened to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot a half-dozen times before I wrote this Wilco rant. And I've now listened to it [as well as several live shows] another half-dozen times since and it's finally starting to click with me. I wonder how much I was affected by the massive critical buzz and let down that I didn't feel it immediately. Maybe I just needed to give it time.

But I dunno. I now like it more than I did--and I'd already liked it, mind ye--but I still don't think it's a five-star album (or hotel).

I'd really like to hear "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" done straight, without the intrusive and, in my opinion, ineffective ambient noise layered on top. I think there's a first-class song buried under there. Look, Hank Williams Sr is great. Sonic Youth is great. Hank Williams Sr. playing with Sonic Youth thanks to the magic of time travel might indeed be great. Layering Sonic Youth feedback over an existing Hank Williams Sr song? Not so much.

Again, I guess I kinda feel like Wilco is a really, really good band, maybe even a great one. But it seems like the huzzahs are overblown, like folks aren't happy enough just saying that Tom Petty, say, is a major American rock artist, but have to try to put him up there as an equal with Bob Dylan.
