In Memoriam

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel who died in Afghanistan and Iraq or from their injuries at a U.S. military hospital:

Marcus R. Alford, 28, of Knoxville, Tenn.; captain, Army National Guard. Alford was one of two guardsmen killed Feb. 21 when their OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter crashed near Qayyarah Airfield West south of Mosul, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 230th Cavalry Regiment in Louisville, Tenn.

Joshua H. Birchfield, 24, of Westville, Ind.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Birchfield was killed Feb. 19 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Michael David P. Cardenaz, 29, of Corona; staff sergeant, Army. Cardenaz was killed Feb. 20 when his unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo. 

Christopher W. Eckard, 30, of Hickory, N.C.; staff sergeant, Marine Corps. Eckard was killed Feb. 20 when a roadside bomb exploded near him in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Marcos Gorra, 22, of North Bergen, N.J.; sergeant, Army. Gorra died Feb. 21 during a training exercise at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan, near Kabul. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Billie J. Grinder, 25, of Gallatin, Tenn.; chief warrant officer, Army. Grinder was one of two guardsmen killed Feb. 21 when their OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter crashed near Qayyarah Airfield West south of Mosul, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 230th Cavalry Regiment in Louisville, Tenn.

Matthias N. Hanson, 20, of Buffalo, Ky.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Hanson was killed Feb. 21 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Daniel T. O'Leary, 23, of Youngsville, N.C.; corporal, Army. O'Leary was killed Tuesday when his vehicle overturned in Fallouja, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 307th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Adam D. Peak, 25, of Florence, Ky.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Peak was killed Feb. 21 when he stepped on a land mine in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

JRSalvacion, 27, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; private first class, Army. Salvacion was killed Feb. 21 when insurgents attacked his unit with a homemade bomb in Senjaray in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.

William C. Spencer, 40, of Tacoma, Wash.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Spencer died Thursday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of noncombat-related injuries suffered Feb. 20 at Combat Outpost Marez in Mosul, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 146th Field Artillery Regiment in Olympia, Wash.

Gregory S. Stultz, 22, of Brazil, Ind.; corporal, Marine Corps. Stultz was killed Feb. 19 when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Eric L. Ward, 19, of Redmond, Wash.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Ward was killed in combat Feb. 21 in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel who died in Afghanistan and Kuwait:

Sean L. Caughman, 43, of Fort Worth; petty officer first class, Navy Reserve. Caughman died of noncombat-related injuries Tuesday in Kuwait while serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 22, a Seabee unit at the Fort Worth Naval Air Station.

Kyle J. Coutu, 20, of Providence, R.I.; private first class, Marine Corps. Coutu was killed in combat Thursday in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Eric D. Currier, 21, of Londonderry, N.H.; private first class, Marine Corps. Currier was killed in combat Wednesday in Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Kielin T. Dunn, 19, of Chesapeake, Va.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Dunn was killed in combat Thursday in Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Jason H. Estopinal, 21, of Dallas, Ga.; private first class, Marine Corps. Estopinal was killed in combat Monday in Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Larry M. Johnson, 19, of Scranton, Pa.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Johnson was killed in combat Thursday in Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Jeremy R. McQueary, 27, of Columbus, Ind.; sergeant, Marine Corps. McQueary was killed in combat Thursday in Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Bobby J. Pagan, 23, of Austin, Texas; specialist, Army. Pagan was among three soldiers killed Feb. 13 in a suicide bomb attack on their security checkpoint in the Zhari district of southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Noah M. Pier, 25, of Charlotte, N.C.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Pier was killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near him while he was on foot patrol in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

John A. Reiners, 24, of Lakeland, Fla.; staff sergeant, Army. Reiners was among three soldiers killed Feb. 13 in a suicide bomb attack on their security checkpoint in the Zhari district of southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Jacob H. Turbett, 21, of Canton, Mich.; corporal, Marine Corps. Turbett was killed in combat Feb. 13 in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Charles A. Williams, 29, of Fair Oaks, Calif.; private first class, Army. Williams died of noncombat-related injuries Feb. 7 at Camp Nathan Smith in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 97th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade at Ft. Riley, Kan.

Jeremiah T. Wittman, 26, of Darby, Mont.; sergeant, Army. Wittman was among three soldiers killed Feb. 13 in a suicide bomb attack on their security checkpoint in the Zhari district of southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Alejandro J. Yazzie, 23, of Rock Point, Ariz.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Yazzie was shot and killed in a firefight Tuesday in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

He was assigned to the 6th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne), 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Dillon B. Foxx, 22, of Traverse City, Mich.; sergeant, Army. Foxx died Friday in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Michael L. Freeman Jr., 21, of Fayetteville, Pa.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Freeman died Monday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

David J. Hartman, 27, of Okinawa, Japan; sergeant first class, Army. Hartman was one of three soldiers killed Wednesday in Timagara, Pakistan, when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 96th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne), 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Zachary G. Lovejoy, 20, of Albuquerque, N.M.; private first class, Army. Lovejoy was one of two soldiers killed Tuesday when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device in Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Matthew S. Sluss-Tiller, 35, of Callettsburg, Ky.; sergeant first class, Army. Sluss-Tiller was one of three soldiers killed Wednesday in Timagara, Pakistan, when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 96th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne), 95th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

David J. Smith, 25, of Frederick, Md.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Smith died Jan. 26 from wounds received Jan. 23 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve at Camp Pendleton.

Mark A. Stets, 39, of El Cajon, Calif.; staff sergeant, Army. Stets was one of three soldiers killed Wednesday in Timagara, Pakistan, when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 8th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne), 4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

David J. Thompson, 39, of Hooker, Okla.; captain, Army. Thompson was one of two soldiers killed Jan. 29 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Daniel Whitten, 28, of Grimes, Iowa; captain, Army. Whitten was one of two soldiers killed Tuesday when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device in Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Scott G. Barnett, 24, of Concord, Calif.; private first class, Army. Barnett was killed in combat Thursday in Tallil, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 412th Aviation Support Battalion, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade in Katterbach, Germany.

Carlos E. Gill, 25, of Fayetteville, N.C.; sergeant, Army. Gill died of an undisclosed illness Tuesday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., after being medically evacuated Dec. 19 from Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan, near Kabul. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Kane was one of two reservists killed Jan. 23 when their unit was attacked by a suicide bomber in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. Timothy J. Poole, 22, of Bowling Green, Ky.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Poole was among three Marines killed in combat Jan. 24 in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. Xin Qi, 25, of Cordova, Tenn.; petty officer second class, Navy Reserve. Qi was one of two reservists killed Jan. 23 when their unit was attacked by a suicide bomber in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion at Camp Pendleton.

Adam K. Ginett, 29, of Knightdale, N.C.; technical sergeant, Air Force. Ginett was one of two troops killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near them while they were on foot patrol in the Arghandab district of southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 31st Civil Engineer Squadron at Aviano Air Base, Italy.

Gifford E. Hurt, 19, of Yonkers, N.Y.; private first class. Hurt died of noncombat-related injuries Wednesday in Mosul, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 14th Field Artillery Regiment, 214th Fires Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Sill, Okla.

Thaddeus S. Montgomery, 29, of West Yellowstone, Mont.; staff sergeant, Army. Montgomery died of noncombat-related injuries Wednesday at Korengal Outpost in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Paul Pena, 27, of San Marcos, Texas; captain, Army. Pena was one of two troops killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near them while they were on foot patrol in the Arghandab district of southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Anton R. Phillips, 31, of Inglewood; staff sergeant, Army. Phillips died of undisclosed causes Dec. 31 at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam in Afghanistan's Laghman province, east of Kabul. He was assigned to G Forward Support Company, 77th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Task Force Wildhorse at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam.

Michael P. Shannon, 52, of Canadensis, Pa.; sergeant first class, Army Reserve. Shannon died of a heart attack Jan. 17 in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Headquarters, 7th Army and U.S. Army Europe in Heidelberg, Germany.

Lucas T. Beachnaw, 23, of Lowell, Mich.; sergeant, Army. Beachnaw was killed Wednesday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in the village of Darya Ya in eastern Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team at Camp Ederle, Italy.

Jason O.B. Hickman, 35, of Kingsport, Tenn.; sergeant first class, Army. Hickman died Jan. 7 at Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered earlier that day when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device and small-arms fire at Combat Outpost Bowri Tana. He was assigned to Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.

Christopher R. Hrbek, 25, of Westwood, N.J.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Hrbek was killed Thursday when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Ingham was among three Marines killed in a firefight Monday after being ambushed in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Michael R. Jarrett, 20, of North Platte, Neb.; private first class, Army. Jarrett died of noncombat-related injuries Jan. 6 in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade in Illesheim, Germany.

Mark D. Juarez, 23, of San Antonio; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Juarez was killed Jan. 9 when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Jamie R. Lowe, 21, of Johnsonville, Ill.; corporal, Marine Corps. Lowe was among three Marines killed in a firefight Monday after being ambushed in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Jacob A. Meinert, 20, of Fort Atkinson, Wis.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Meinert was killed Jan. 10 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Merriweather was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when their vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device at Combat Outpost McClain in central Afghanistan's Logar province, south of Kabul. He was assigned to the 118th Military Police Company (Airborne), 503rd Military Police Battalion (Airborne), 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Nicholas K. Uzenski, 21, of Tomball, Texas; corporal, Marine Corps. Uzenski was among three Marines killed in a firefight Monday after being ambushed in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, on the Pakistani border. He was assigned to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Whitsitt was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when their vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device at Combat Outpost McClain in central Afghanistan's Logar province, south of Kabul. James R. Layton, 22, of Riverbank, Calif., northeast of Modesto; petty officer third class, Navy. Layton was among four troops killed Tuesday during a firefight with insurgents who ambushed their unit in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province, on the Pakistani border. A hospital corpsman who provided medical attention to troops in the field, he was assigned to an embedded training team with the Combined Security Transition Command in Afghanistan, which is responsible for training and equipping Afghan security forces.

Youvert Loney, 28, of Pohnpei, Micronesia; sergeant, Army. Loney was killed Sept. 5 when his unit was attacked with recoilless rifles and small-arms fire during an ambush by insurgents in Abad in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province, on the Pakistani border. Matthew P. Houseal, 54, of Amarillo, Texas; major, Army Reserve. Houseal was among five troops killed Monday when a U.S. soldier opened fire at a combat stress-control center at Camp Liberty in Baghdad. Houseal was assigned to the 55th Medical Company in Indianapolis.

Steven Hutchison, 60, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; major, Army. Hutchison died May 10 in Basra, Iraq, south of Baghdad, of injuries suffered when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Al Farr. He was the oldest member of the U.S. military to die of combat-related wounds in Iraq or Afghanistan. Hutchison had served two tours of duty in Vietnam and voluntarily rejoined the Army under its retiree recall program. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kan.

Ryan C. McGhee, 21, of Fredericksburg, Va.; corporal, Army. McGhee was killed Wednesday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in central Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Richard A. Dewater, 21, of Topeka, Kan.; private first class, Army. Dewater was killed April 15 when an improvised explosive device detonated near him while he was on foot patrol near Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, east of Kabul. She was assigned to the 634th Brigade Support Battalion of the Illinois Army National Guard in Crestwood, Ill.

Jessica Y. Sarandrea, 22, of Miami, Fla.; private first class, Army. Sarandrea died Tuesday in Mosul, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked her forward operating base with mortar fire. She was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Donte J. Whitworth, 21, of Noblesville, Ind.; corporal, Marine Corps. Whitworth died Feb. 28 as a result of a non-hostile vehicle accident in Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz.

Baum died Feb. 21 in Baghdad of injuries suffered when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Mushada, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry Regiment, 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team in Pennsylvania.

Bunting was among four soldiers killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Kandahar in southern Afghanistan. He was a member of the Individual Ready Reserve, assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Syracuse, N.Y.

Brian M. Connelly, 26, of Union Beach, N.J.; specialist, Army. Connelly was killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Adhamiya, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, Task Force 1-6, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.

William E. Emmert, 36, of Lincoln, Tenn.; first lieutenant, Army National Guard. Emmert was killed Tuesday when two men wearing Iraqi police uniforms opened fire during a U.S. military inspection visit to a police outpost in Mosul, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 269th Military Police Company, 117th Military Police Battalion in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

David L. Hurt, 36, of Tucson; master sergeant, Army. Hurt was one of two soldiers killed Feb. 20 when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb and their unit was then attacked with small-arms fire near the village of Khordi in southern Afghanistan's Oruzgan province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

James M. Dorsey, 23, of Beardstown, Ill.; specialist, Army. Dorsey died Feb. 8 in the east Baghdad neighborhood of Kamaliya after he was found unresponsive by fellow troops and efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.
