Assuming this story played out as stated--Wow. This is really interesting, although I am not at all surprised as I think that more parents than not these days are much more worried about little Johnny's feelings and self esteem than they are about producing a worthy member of society. I was surprised at how many people (in the comments) suggested posting the finder's information as well as other acts of vindictive behavior. I certainly think that the victim should notify the police whose jurisdiction under which this would fall. She should have done so when the interaction with the Good Samaritan turned south if only just to start a record of events. But, to try and "one up" the lousy behavior of this sorry excuse for a mother is just as wrong. I'm not sure which bothers me more.

I was amazed...no. That's not true. I was disappointed by how many of the comments were truly ugly.

But, to try and "one up" the lousy behavior of this sorry excuse for a mother is just as wrong.

I'm not sure I agree. I believe she should seek other remedies first, yes, such as contacting the police in her area and in Hawaii. And most of all I believe she should contact the papers in her area, Hawaii and the woman's area. The only reason this woman is doing this, if she is, is because she believes she can get away with it. If she thought anyone would find out, I do not believe for a moment she would have done it.

If, as I said, she did. There's something off here, as I said in the original post. The "off" thing may be the thief--it may be that there's no kid, or the kid's not sick. Or the woman who posted about losing her camera may be making it all up, perhaps as a joke, or on a whim, or as a sociology experiment. But this is almost too weird to believe.

But not quite. Unfortunately.

Checking Google News just now, I see one and only one hit on this story and it's from, oddly, Hungary.

And so it begins.
